Canadian Forestry Corps

The Canadian Forestry Corps was founded in November 1916, when it was discovered that huge quantities of wood were needed for use on the Western Front. The British government identified that the Canadians were most experienced and qualified in the British Empire to harvest timber.

The initial plan was to harvest the trees from Canada’s forests and transport the wood to the Front Line. But space aboard merchant ships was at a premium, so it was decided to bring the Canadian Forestry Corps to Europe, for them to fell trees in the UK and France.
