Formed in the Childers Reforms of 1881, the East Surrey Regiment was an amalgamation of a number of other brigades, including the 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot and the 1st and 3rd Royal Surrey Militias.
During the First World War, the regiment was primarily based in France, and was caught up in the battles of Loos, the Somme, Arras and Ypres.
