The Coldstream Guards is the oldest, continuously serving regular regiment in the British Army. Originally formed in 1650, one of its primary duties is the protection of the monarch.

At the outbreak of the the Great War, the Coldstream Guards was among the first British regiments to arrive in France after war was declared. The regiment fought in many of the fiercest battles of the conflict, including Mons, Loos and the Somme. The regiment suffered heavy losses, and, in two of the skirmishes at Ypres, lost all of its officers.
