Formed in 1881 as part of the Childers Reform of the British Army, the Gloucestershire Regiment – known informally as the Glosters – has its origins dating to 1694.
At the outbreak of the Great War, the regiment’s four territorial and reserve battalions were swelled by the addition of a further eighteen battalions. Sixteen of these saw active service on the Western Front and in Italy, Gallipoli, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia and Salonika.
During the conflict, the Glosters gained more than seventy battle honours, including four Victoria Crosses. A total of 8,100 troops, however, were killed or mortally wounded.
