HM Coastguard

Founded in 1822, HM Coastguard has worked to keep people safe on and around the British coasts ever since. During the First World War, the coastguard was mobilised to help protect the seas around Britain and Ireland, and rescued hundreds of people from ships damaged and sunk by the German ships and U-boats.
