The King’s Shropshire Light Infantry was formed in 1881 as part of the Childers’ Reforms. Two battalions were formed our of the 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot and the 85th The King’s Regiment of Light Infantry (Bucks Volunteers).
During the Great War, the 1st Battalion fought on the Western Front, while the second was based in Salonika, at the eastern end of the Mediterranean. Ten further battalions were formed, serving on the Home and Western Fronts as well as the Middle East.
