The London Regiment was created in 1908 to formalise the 26 volunteer force battalions in the County of London.
With the outbreak of the First World War, the regiment expanded to 88 battalions, of which 49 saw action in the trenches of the Western Front. The other battalions action in the Gallipoli Campaign, at Salonika, against the Turks in Palestine, and in Waziristan and Afghanistan.
