When war broke out, the Empire was called upon to play its part. The New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) raised 100,000 troops, and its army’s infantry forces were set up on a territorial basis.
A number of specialist units reflecting the British Army were set up, including Engineers, Tunnellers, Cyclists and Signallers. The Engineers units served on the Western Front, in the Middle East, and in the horrific stalemate at Gallipoli.
