When war broke out, the Empire was called upon to play its part. The New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) raised 100,000 troops, and its army’s infantry forces were set up on a territorial basis.
Alongside Infantry, Artillery and Mounted Rifles regiments, a number of specialist units were created, based loosely on the British Army model. These included Engineers, Tunnellers, Cyclists, Machine Gunners and Signallers. These units fought in all areas of the conflict, from the Western Front to the Middle East and Gallipoli.
