Royal Army Chaplains’ Department

The Royal Army Chaplains’ Department was formed in 1796. Up to this point chaplains had been assigned to individual regiments, but the new department centralised their role.

The department was initially only open to Anglican chaplains: Roman Catholic chaplains were recruited in 1836, Presbyterian ministers in 1858, Methodists from 1881 and Jewish chaplains eleven years later.

During the First World War around 4,400 Army Chaplains were employed: 179 lost their lives on active service.
