Welsh Guards

The Welsh Guards were formed in 1915, on the direct orders of King George V and Earl Kitchener. During the First World War, the regiment saw action at Loos, the Somme, Ypres, Cambrai, Albert, Canal du Nord and the Sambre. The regiment also had the honour of guarding Buckingham Palace, which it did for the first time on St David’s Day, 1st March 1915.

The Welch Guards lost 860 men during the conflict, and was awarded twenty battle honours, including a Victoria Cross.
