The West Somerset Yeomanry was formed in 1794, raised to defend the United Kingdom against invasion by the French during the Napoleonic Wars.
Originally intended as a wholly territorial force, so many men volunteered for overseas service at the outbreak of the First World War, that the West Somerset Yeomanry formed three battalions. The 1st Battalion fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. The 2nd Battalion remained on the Home Front, before moving to Ireland in 1918. The 3rd Battalion acted as a reserve unit, training new recruits.
