In the wide expanse of Trowbridge Cemetery, Wiltshire, is a headstone marking the grave of Albert Victor Rogers. The son of Mrs E Rogers, of Mortimer Street, Trowbridge, his life is a challenge to unpick.
The limited military records that are available, suggest that Albert’s mother was Ann Elizabeth Rogers. Based on his year of birth (around 1897), the 1901 census offers two suggestions. One has an Albert living with his mother Elizabeth, the other a Victor living with his mother Annie.
There are no records relating to his birth or baptism, and Private Rogers’ military records are limited. The note that he was attached to Wiltshire Regiment Depot, and the he died in a military hospital on 8th November 1918. Details of his passing and funeral do not appear in any local contemporary newspapers.
Sadly, therefore, it seems that the life, loves and aspirations of Albert Victor Rogers are destined to be lost to time, buried with him in the cemetery in Trowbridge.
